Schwäbische Alb

The Swabian Alb is a low mountain range in southern Germany that stretches from southwest to northeast. It is characterized by a more or less rugged plateau, which is bordered to the northwest by a very steep drop, but gently slopes down to the southeast, where it merges imperceptibly into the Alpine foothills.

The north-western escarpment is called the Albtrauf and separates the Alb plateau from the Alb foreland. In the north-east, the low mountain range borders on the Nördlinger Ries. To the southwest, it can be demarcated by the Swabian-Lower Alemannic language border near Tuttlingen and Spaichingen, but other areas are often the subject of consideration (see classification). The length of the mountain range is about 200 km, the average width about 40 km.

Geologically, the Swabian Jura is part of the Southwest German strata. It is also part of the Tabular Jura landscape between Basel and the Nördlinger Ries. Together with the Folded Jura and the Franconian Alb, this Tabular Jura landscape in turn forms part of the Jura mountain ranges between Geneva and Coburg.
